What's in a name?

So, after many nights lying awake and having the name discussion, Adam and I have finally come up with something we both love. It sounds pretty, it's not too trendy, not over used....Drumroll, please...

Mallory Jess Beauchamp!
(Yes, we are aware of Mallory Keaton from Family Ties! ;)

Alas, after some more research tonight I discovered the meaning of the name.

Mallory: ill-omened, unlucky, unfortunate.

Well, @#$%.

So I pose this question to you, dear blogfriends:
Is the meaning of a name a reason to not use it? Are we setting our daughter up for ultimate unluckiness? Or is it all nonsense that we should disregard?
You know I love having input on every decision we make, it's way more fun this way...
So, give us your opinion...!

I think if you love the name, then go with the name. Who cares what someone said thousand of years ago about what it meant?

Go with it. I never looked up names and their meanings until somebody bought me one of those stupid baby naming books! UGH! Good grief, who thinks up some of the names anyway? LOL I like Mallory and I think the whole name is beautiful!

PS.
I forgot about the Family Ties reference
until you pointed it out. I loved that show! LOL

Okay so MY name, Kelly Denise, collectively means Wild and Frenzied Warrior Woman. I am not certain if I fit the name meaning exactly, as I have never tromped off into the woods yielding a sword and shield, but I am a little crazy and I do consider myself a tough woman. I have always believed that people fit their names, but do meaning have anything to do with it? I don't know. Ill-Omened, yeash, kinda sucks 'cause it is not like the meaning was stalky, or clumsy. Felicia and Olga both mean lucky and Seely means fortunate, maybe you could cancel the name meanings out! Ha ha! Err, good luck.

Well I LOVE it! I wouldn't worry too much about the meaning. :)

Block it out, I say! Our new son will have the initials MZ. Our last name begins with Hammer. Apparently the men in my husband's family have often been called Hammer. Lovely, I know.

So, shortly after coming up with our new son's name, my husband said, yes, he'll be MZ Hammer.

I am so blocking that out.

My name means "Laurel" -- what does THAT mean?

Mallory Jess is SUCH a pretty name. Max and Mallory. It's a perfect fit.

XOXO

First of all, omg Mazel Tov, it's a girl!!!!!!!!! Yippeee!!!! Ok, now back to your question. I think Mallory Jess Beauchamp is magnetic. Who really knows the meaning of names unless your expecting a baby, right?

I'm not big on meanings either, perhaps because Rachel means sheep, or ewe "officially." If you love it, go with it!

Heather.. I love Mallory- actually it was on my list I had forgotten all about that... but yes I love it! And just so you know.. we are thinking about Jacob for a boys name and in the Bible, Jacob was a liar and a theif... so yano.. I mean that's not going to make my child a liar and a theif... is it?

I think it's adorable and it wasn't there a Mallory in the Babysitter's Club books? (not that I read the whole frickin series as a kid). We actually picked Aidan's name because of the meaning "little fire" because of all of the heartburn, I was certain that he'd be a firecracker. Well, you've met Mr. Mellow, so the meaning of the name is NO indicator of the person. But just for fun, how about everyone post their name meanings on this thread. Mine is Fair Meadow (Jennifer Leigh)

I was OB.sessed. with The Babysitter's Club. Yes, I know that Mallory was a junior member for awhile and was best friends with Jessie, the ballet dancer. I still have them ALL if you ever want to reminisce. I loved the Super ones where they went on vacation. Okay, Okay. I love them.
MY NAME which I have never looked up entirely means:
Flower Bitter.
Mayeb we could make that "bitter flower". Greeeeeat.
Ha, well, that does go to show that these meanings are poo!
Fair Meadow is beautiful though. It could be your stage name. Haha.
Anyone else want to share?
Do it or Kelly will come after you with her sword.

I think if you like the name you should use it. I don't know if the meaning of the name will have an affect on her for the remainder of her life, although some cultures swear by it. I did think about meanings and origin when we were picking names. Owen means "wellborn or firstborn" but in the end I picked it cause it was my Grandmother's maiden name.

It is something you have to decide. My mom's test of a good name.......put Doctor in front of it and see if it sounds good...haha..no joke..that is her test!

My name means "endless suffering" and "aimless wanderer," and I'd say that's had only a slightly depressing effect on my life. :-) Honestly, it's fun to have a name with a bizarre meaning—good party conversation when she gets older. Go with the name you love!

Speaking of names, Greg just told me there's a football player entering college this year named Yourhighness Morgan. NOW don't you wish you were having a boy?

So, you know that I am like the person with the worst luck in the universe. I am still alive and mostly happy.....so, she can join my club. Come on....we ill-omened people don't have it so bad and hey, then she can just blame you instead of the universe since you unleashed this on her...I'm am just kidding with that one. Anyway, just as we were talking about Alex P. Keaton the other day, I was thinking how much I loved that show. I had forgotten about the Babysitter's Club, although that was my sister's thing, I was Sweet Valley High all the way.
The name sounds great. I say you can pick a name for its meaning, but can't not pick a name for its meaning. And hey, she can always change it ala Phoebe to Princess Consuela Banana Hammock if she doesn't like it. I wouldn't suggest Crap Bag though.
Love ya,
Cindy

Well. The meaning of my name is God Beholds. And in combination with the meaning of Mallory? She's going to be perfectly balanced! I love it, I love you, I love her, I love Charlie. (Ok..and Adam, too). XOXOXOXO

I think that's an excellent name.

The power of a name is all in the energies you put around it, not to get all "Practical Magic" on you or anything. But seriously, if you're not worried about the "ill-omenedness" of Mallory, then you'll be fine. I mean, my name's Andrew which means "manly" and we know how that turned out. Hehe.

Plus, Justine Bateman was cool. Not like Tina Yothers.

April Dawn means Opening Sunrise.. and I hate the mornings... and Grant is "great" and Michael is "Who is like God" -- doesn't mean my son won't grow up to be some hellion.... LOL And I just looked up Douglas and it means Black Blue... whatever that is suppose to mean. According to my baby name book I have.. Mallory means unlucky (French...) OR--- GERMAN means Army Counselor... either way I still like it

Love it! Screw the meaning, make up your own! See you on Saturday! YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!

I say if you like the name, go for it. I personally love Mallory. The name we have picked out for our Ethiopian child means "sweet blond haired boy." We didn't know that when we picked the name, but the name means something else to us. Go for it!

Go with it....Msllory is a beautiful name.
I believe Tristan means tumult or sadness/suffering. He certainly doesn't fit the translation. The name however suits him well. He is like many Tristan's I know...stubborn. Maybe they will have to change the meaning of the name : )

D and I have been having the same debate with ourselves over the name Claudia, which means lame.
It's really difficult because we always imagine little "Claudia" looking up here name in the future and being really ticked off that we named her that.
We're still going over other options.
